24th December 2009 - Seasons Greetings

This will be the final entry until Santa has been, so we would just like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Look forward to the new year and great fishing, see you all soon.

24th December 2009 - Bag Pack & Raffle

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who took part in the Bag Pack at Morrisons store, Warrington on Thursday 17th December, and to all the customers and staff. Also thanks to those who purchased our Xmas raffle tickets, with the draw taking place on Saturday 19th December. Congratulations to the winners who by now will be tucking into their prizes.
Between both events we raised £507 which will go towards coaching requirements for our adult members to supervise Junior matches. The coaching staff will be an inportant role in the club and future Junior matches, so the money raised will be very useful indeed.
Below you will see photo's of Santa and Mrs Christmas who came along to help sell the raffle tickets at our local pub. Thanks again to everyone...

5th December 2009 - Winter League 'Bridgewater Canal'

Drama unfolding today on the last match of the year and the last match in this year's Winter League.
It was all to fight for between Kev Smith and James Bryan, only those two members could win the league. Before the match Kev was on 39 points and James on 36 points with third place man Alan Lamb on 26 points, so he could not catch up and win the league with only a maximum of 11 points available.
After today's match James managed 4th place and Kev 7th place. Who was going to win.....A quick calculation and we thought Kev had pinched it. But hold on, wait for the excel spreadsheet......Oh No! 4th Place gave James 8 points and 7th place gave Kev 5 points. Lordy Lordy, they are tied on 44 points so it was decided as usual by total weight for the matches in this Winter League.
Nail biting or what! After 5 matches over 3 months who had caught the most fish......It was James he had caught a total of 71lb 3oz 7drm, Kev had to settle for second place with a weight of 58lb 8oz 13drm.
All James could say was "Thank God for Rosemary Wood where I had 33lb 5oz, that has won it for me".

All we can say is congratulations to everybody, if all leagues were like this I would be grey and bald (oh, I already am!). Seriously great fishing, and we look forward to 2010 for more of the same.

If losing on weight wasn't bad enough, Kev also drew the Golden Peg today, so it really is a curse.

To add to the usual match activities we had a draw for a free 2010/11 licence and five £10 vouchers to be used at Cheshire Angling. The winners are as follows:-

Licence: Mr F Davies
Vouchers: Mr A Lamb, Mr J Fagan, Mr JP Bryan, Mr R Wright and Mr JA Bryan.

Well done everyone.

After the match we all went to the Walton Arms Pub for our usual end of year carvery, very nice it was too.
From everyone at POHAS, we hope all of our members have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year, we look forward to seeing you all again to do it all again in 2010.

As usual our links below will take you to all the info, apologies, we have no photo gallery of today's match, but it will be back in 2010...

Yesterday two of our 'healthy' members took part in the Macclesfield half marathon. Over 1,000 men and women took part in what is a tough hilly course. Both Dan Chesterson and John Bryan took part and we are pleased to say completed the course. Dan managed 705th with John 799th. 869 finished the race out of a starting group of over 1,300.
John was also raising money for Macmillan Nurses, so if anyone would like to sponsor him, he will hang on to the form for a while.

From everyone at POHAS, well done!

14th September 2009 - Junior League 2009

Our final Junior match took place on Saturday at Whitegate Pool. It was disappointing to see a poor turnout from our Junior members, who in the past have asked us for more and longer matches, when they can't be bothered to turn out for the ones that have been arranged on their behalf (moan over!).
Anyway, thanks to those who did make the effort to the match, we hope you enjoyed the fishing and the 'chippy lunch'. The league is now complete so congratulations to everyone who fished the matches throughout the Summer. Well done to Josh Turner for winning the league, another close battle which went down to the last match . We don't have a photo gallery for the last match as our paperazzi was away, however below you will see quick links to the full match results and the final Junior League. Also we have put a quicklink to the Junior matches for 2010 (yes we are organised), so you can put the dates in your diaries, PDA's, Phones, Blackberry's whatever!

Our Presentation Night when the trophies and other goodies are handed out, takes place at Roosters Club on Friday 2nd October and the fun starts at 7.30pm. Look forward to seeing you all there.

21st August 2009 - Boddington Reservoir Match

We can now advise that the peg numbers we have for the above match on 5th September are No's 41 - 65. Apparently someone came third the other day on peg 60 with 245lb, so make sure you have your keepnets with you!

20th August 2009 - Junior League Amendment

It has come to our attention that we have had to review points awarded on the Junior matches. There was an additional rule which is detailed on page 22 of the 2009 club licence which states that to be eligible for points in the league Junior members must have a valid licence by the second match of the league. Some of those fishing the matches were not eligible and were incorrectly awarded points. This has now been corrected. Apologies for this, however we hope you understand the reasoning for the amendment.

17th August 2009 - 'Pairs Trophy 2009'

Based as you would expect on combined catch weights, this years 'deadly duo' were Alan Lamb and Ken Whibley who had a combined weight of 81lb 8oz. Well done and congratulations to everyone for a keenly fought match.

The Junior series kicks off at Brownlee's on 27th June, Juniors, please meet at the poolside 9.00am, if you haven't got your club licence yet (tut tut), you will be able to purchase on the day for £5, this will last you up until 15th March 2010, value for money or what!!
Intermediates (club members aged between 15 - 18) your three match series starts at Sycamore Fishery on 1st August, anyone requiring transport should meet by Brownlee's at 9.00am.
Seniors. your matches begin on 20th June at Blake Hall. Meet at venue at 8.00am (after booking on the match of course....speak to Frank). You will also notice that we have introduced a third division this year in the Seniors League.
Due to the number of anglers fishing we decided to reinstate Div 3, you can view the Summer league via the Matches page or click here. Names are shown alphabetically until results begin and is based upon final positions in 2008. Any new members will automatically be entered into Div 3.

Anyone requiring a club licence can obtain one in several ways. Either via a bailiff who you will meet while fishing either Brownlee's or Whitegate Pool, alternatively contact Frank Davies (Chairman) after 6pm on 01925 652327, or Paul Bryan (Club Secretary) on 07803 662159. Licences are valid until 15th March 2010 and cost £15 for adults, £10 for OAP's and £5 for Juniors.

It is also important to remember that anyone fishing in the UK (club member or not) aged 12 or over also requires an Environment Agency Rod Licence, available on-line or from your nearest Post Office. Being caught without one could cost you £2,500.

Look forward to seeing you on a match....Tightlines.

Membership of this new organisation gives our club great opportunities to develop the club, to meet the needs of current and hopefully future members.
You can visit the Angling Trust website by clicking on their logo to the right. Anglers can also become individual members and the more anglers that join, the more say we anglers can have with the 'powers that be' in maintaining, developing and protecting our sport in England. What good news for our keen match anglers. We have managed to secure a booking at Larford Lakes, Worcestershire for Saturday 21st August 2010 on 'Arena Lake'. This lake is now probably the best pool on the venue and we have grabbed it!
We know it is over twelve months away, but if you are one of our match fishermen, put it in your diary for what is likely to be a great coach trip...

A fine evening in May saw several members join a work party at our Whitegate Pool.
This work party is a follow up to hedging planted back in November 2008. The only access that will remain is via the gravel path seen clearly in the photo to the right.
Therefore it was necessary for us to remove the bridge which spanned the water gully.
You will see from the photograph below the gully as it is now. The railway sleepers which were originally used to construct the bridge have been re-used as backfill to one of the deck structures, clearly seen in the photo to the right and bottom right.
We would like to thank the members who came along to help out, they were, Frank, Alf, Roly, Joe, Paul R, James and John. Thanks men! A great job well done.

28th April 2009 - POHAS Website

Another milestone has been reached by the club today.
Since the relaunch of the club website in March 2006 we have had 20,000 unique visits to our site. Proving that our club is one of the most popular and visited fishing websites in the UK.
Thanks to everyone who has visited us, we hope you enjoy the site. We are always looking to improve so if you have ideas for things for us to include, let us know, just use the 'contact us' button on the left of the page to send us an e-mail.

28th April 2009 - Rod Licences

We know we mention this several times, but it is important that all anglers have an Environment Agency rod licence before fishing anywhere in the UK. This is in addition to our club licence if you are one of our POHAS members.
The maximum penalty for not having a rod licence is £2,500. A visit to court and £500 fines are commonplace. I'm sure for the sake of £26 (Adult Coarse and Trout Licence), it is the cheaper option.

28th April 2009 - Frequently Asked Question "Closed Seasons"

On many occasions we are asked about closed seasons, and is there still a closed season. The short answer is yes and no, however there is a long answer.
In 1994 the NRA (National Rivers Authority) carried out an extensive public consultation on the matter. The result of this was a new byelaw introduced on 13th March 1995. This byelaw retained a closed season on Rivers, Streams, Drains and some sites of special scientific interest. Stillwaters then became exempt. Some of the reasoning being that most stillwaters are of single ownership and this allows the owner to manage the fish stocks and to impose whatever restrictions are needed, included non-statutory closed seasons.

Hope this answers a very popular question.

25th April 2009 - In the news again

News of the recent work undertaken at Brownlee's has made it into the Warrington Guardian this week. There is still more work to do with the newly installed islands to be planted along with planting in the margins which are to be extended. Nice to see that we are being noticed!

20th April 2009 - Land Ahoy!

Somewhat of a cryptic title we know, however earlier this evening several members congregated at Brownlee's Pool to install the two artificial islands supplied to us free of charge by the Environment Agency.
Thanks to the members who helped, they were John Burgoyne, John & James Bryan, Frank Davies, Roy Sutton and Paul Bryan. Special thanks to Ken who spent three hours dredging the pool to remove leaf litter and to John Bryan who bravely sailed out in a dinghy to locate the islands.
We have posted a few pictures below to give you an idea of the evenings entertainment.
The next stage is to plant the islands which will be done soon. Once again thanks to all for the invaluable effort and also to our friends at the Environment Agency (you know who you are) for the donation of the islands.

17th April 2009 - Partridge Lakes

Just a reminder to all members fishing on Saturday at Partridge Lakes and all matches, you need to have two keep nets at all times.
Please don't ask for sympathy if a venue refuses you fishing because you only have one net. It ain't a hardship to throw an extra keep net in with your tackle. Don't say you haven't been warned.

15th April 2009 - Spring League 2009

For those of you who may have forgotten, the leagues start this Saturday 18th April with our Spring League and the first match which is at Partridge Lakes on 'Covey 3'.
If you want to fish this match and you haven't booked on it, contact our Chairman Frank Davies on 01925 652327.

3rd April 2009 - Brownlee's Work Party

Today we had the first of our 2009 work parties.
We were on Brownlee's and with the help of Frank, Ken, James, John and Paul we managed to remove a substantial amount of leaf litter which had built up over the Winter. We gave our new generator and pump an airing to help oxygenate the water and we also added twenty onion sacks full of Barley Straw around both pools to help prevent any algae problems.
Leaf litter removal

On Monday evening we are hoping to be able to install the two artificial islands supplied to us generously by the Environment Agency. This will give added features to Brownlee's, add extra plants to the local area and also help encourage additional wildlife in and around the pond.

If any members are available on Monday evening (6th April) from approximately 4.00pm onwards we would be happy to see you there.

Remember if you are caught fishing without one you could be subject to a £2,500 fine.

2nd April 2009 - Brownlee's Work Party

As agreed at last nights meeting, we will be having a work party on Brownlee's tomorrow to install the artificial ponds and other additional works.

MARCH 2009

25th March 2009 - Whitegate Pool

We have received a telephone call today from Sankey Valley Rangers.
It concerns discarded fishing line around Whitegate Pool.
The club licence clearly states (Rule 8, Page 5 of current
licence
), "Litter must be removed or placed in the bins provided".
There has been an unfortunate incident today when a Moorhen became entangled in fishing line left by an angler. The bird was in obvious distress according to a Sankey Valley Ranger who attended the incident. The bird evaded capture by the Rangers and to the best of our knowledge is around somewhere still entangled, or possibly worse met an untimely end brought about by the fishing line.
Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society is a Community based club, and anyone leaving litter is causing work for others upset to local residents and more importantly as in this case endangering wildlife - Not community spirited!!.
We would like to remind members of their duties, anyone found disregarding the rules will at the least be asked to stop fishing and leave the property,or persistent offenders will be excluded from the club.
The rules are there for a very good reason and we hope you feel they are not unreasonable.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

21st March 2009 - Pre-Season Match Results

The weather forecast was good, the day was full of promise, on the drive down to Cudmore the sun came up, hardly any breeze and we had a good breakfast in the Cudmore Cafe.
Typical POHAS luck, as soon as we started to set up on 'Pool 2' the breeze picked up which eventually turned into a strong cold breeze then it clouded over.
If you were shaded by the trees it was quite warm (Neil), everywhere else was like being in an icy wind tunnel.
Weights today were not brilliant but as we know the big fish have been taken out and transferred to other pools, they have been replaced with babies! Although to be fair the small Carp that were caught were in a good condition and they were not F1's - 'Proper Carp'!.
Fifteen brave souls fished today, most fished for the full five hours (all-in was at 9.30), some had a rest from the hurricane (inc your webmaster).
Thanks to everyone that turned out and we look forward to seeing you all when the league starts on 18th April at Partridge Lakes.
You will see from the peg numbers that end pegs were the kiss of death and most of the weights were pulled from the middle.
Results for today's practice are shown below, well done to Alan, Ken and Adam who were 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. See you all at Partridge...

It is with regret that we have had to postpone our collection day at Asda Westbrook which was due to take place this forthcoming Sunday 8th March. Unfortunately Warrington Borough Council were unable to supply us the necessary collection licence which we require in the timescale we had.
We hope to be able to rearrange this event for later in the year.

28th February 2009 - Pre-Season Match

Hi there members,

Just to let you know, we have booked Cudmore 'Pool 2' for Saturday 21st March for a pre-season match.
This is to blow the cobwebs off your tackle and prepare you for the forthcoming season ahead. It is a standalone match and doesn't count towards the Matchman Trophy or any of the leagues.
As it is not an 'official' club match, peg fee's are £7 payable on the day.....and don't forget you need two nets. It's not a club match, so if you want to bring a mate who is not a club member you can, however we will ensure that all club members are accomodated before any additional anglers.

Apparently Pools 2 & 6 have had fresh stocks added, so hopefully it will fish well.
We have booked 15 pegs (which we have to pay for), although the pool will take up to 20.

Hope to see you there.

27th February 2009 - Rod Licences

Hello there fishing friends.
It is almost time to buy your annual rod licence from the Environment Agency, 2009/10 licences will be required from 1st April onwards.
The 'new' licences will be available from 2nd March. You will then be able to purchase via your local Post Office or online at the Environment Agency website.
We will put a link here on our news page once it is available on Monday.
Please remember that whether you are a member of our club or not, if you fish and are aged 12 or older YOU MUST HAVE A ROD LICENCE failure to provide proof of a valid Rod Licence when asked to do so by an officer from the Environment Agency could lead to a hefty fine (up to £2,500 currently), and/or an appearance in court, we can advise that the 'EA' have a zero tolerance policy, so if you are caught without a licence, be prepared for any consequences.

26th February 2009 - Teccy Info

We have updated entire website so as those accessing it via "yer fancy phone", ie, Blackberry's and Google Phones etc can access menu's to navigate the site.
The old 'Flash Buttons' have been replaced with rollover images which are much friendlier for new phones.

25th February 2009 - Ken Stilgoe

Today saw the funeral of one of our club's founder members Ken Stilgoe.
Viewers to our site will have seen the recent announcement of Ken's passing.
The funeral took place today at a full Penketh Methodist Church with family and friends in attendance. Ken's nephew John who's apt cartoon you will see to the right gave the Eulogy which gave a concise account of Ken's life.
On behalf of all club members Chairman Frank Davies and Club Secretary Paul Bryan attended the service. The commital was to take place at Springwood Crematorium which followed the service.
We would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to Ken's family and friends at this sad time.

21st February 2009 - Supercup Round One

As they say in the football world, "The boys did well", unfortunately on our day in the fishing world we didn't do enough. It was always going to be tough as canals are not our strong point.
The match fished on the Leeds-Liverpool canal today from 11.00am til 4.00pm. The weather was OK with overcast skies and an air temperature of 8½°C. There was a breeze but nothing too bad.
Ken had a bad day when some passer by caught his rucksack on Ken's No4 section and broke it! Suffice to say he was less than impressed. Let's hope the insurance man is in a good mood when Ken gets in touch with him.

The final scores today were:-

POHAS Supercup Team

Alliance & Leicester 20 Points, Mersey Dockers 16 Points and POHAS with 12 Points.
Alliance & Leicester go through to the next round so good luck to them, make sure you go on and win it, at least we can then say we lost to the eventual winners.
We have to say a few thank you's so here goes. Thanks to all those who were in our 2009 Supercup squad this year and to the eight who fished today, they were Alan, James, Neil, Ken, John, Phil, Tom and Jack. Special thanks to James and Alan who were Captain and Vice Captain respectively.
Thanks to Paul Charnock Captain of Mersey Dockers for organising the match as they were the home team, and extra thanks for organising the MCA Club to do breakfasts before we started. That leads us on to thanking the staff at the MCA Club for doin' the brews and the food, much appreciated guys!
Finally thanks to both teams for a match fished in a sporting manner.

Although we didn't win the match today as a team, Neil Davies won the match as an individual and pocketed some cash for doing so. Well done Neil, especially as you couldn't make the practice match! That must tell us something!.....By the way, Neil' winning weight was 4lb 7oz.

20th February 2009 - Neil's been to Elle and back!

Congratulations to club member Neil Turner and his partner Paula. At 4.33am this morning Baby Elle joined our fishing community. It's Neil's best catch for a while at 4lb 1oz.
Mother and baby are doing fine, although it was rumoured that Neil was looking for his keep net to put Elle in!

Seriously though, congratulations to you from everyone at Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society

16th February 2009 - Ken Stilgoe (Updated 22:15)

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Ken Stilgoe, one of our clubs founder members passed away yesterday (Sunday 15th February).
Ken had been fighting a long battle with illness.
On behalf of everyone at Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society we would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to Ken's family and friends.

Ken's Funeral is to be held at Penketh Methodist Church on Wednesday 25th February at 2:45pm.

14th February 2009 - Happy Birthday Alf

We can't let the day pass without wishing a big Happy Birthday to Club member Alf Smith who is also one of the club founder members way back in 1983.
We don't think he'll mind us saying, Alf is celebrating his 88th birthday today. So when you see him, wish him a Happy Birthday.

Enjoy your day Alf!

12th February 2009 - Supercup Team Announced

Following the recent practice match and after much head scratching, James and Alan (Captain and Vice Captain) have selected their team for the 1st round match which takes place on Saturday 21st February against Mersey Dockers and Alliance and Leicester. Good luck, we hope the weather improves a bit.

Any team member unable to fish, please let us know as soon as possible.

8th February 2009 - Supercup Practice

A big thank you to the hardy squad members who turned out yesterday for the Supercup practice on Leeds/Liverpool canal. It was somewhat parky to say the least! The first hour was spent ice breaking!
Our Supercup Captain James Bryan has put the following brief comments on our forum which we repeat here for our wider audience:-

"The practice was pretty poor to be honest.

Alan, John, Tom, Ken, Phil and myself were the only ones to catch; with Tom being the most successful with around 15 fish.

The canal was frozen this morning which could have been the cause of the poor catch rate (thanks to those who broke the ice for the rest of us).

The team of 8 will be posted on the website soon".

In two weeks time we will know if it was all worth it!
Thanks again to everyone who turned out for their efforts, as James mentioned above, once the final eight have been decided we will be in touch, and of course publish it here on the website, so keep visiting us for up to date information.

We have received a 'Thank You' card today from his parents Doris & Bob Armstrong.
We would like to share their words with you.

"To Everyone of Ian's Fishing Friends"

We thank you for sharing your memories of our son.
We love Ian dearly and all these memories help us to know how happy he was when with you all.
It was wonderful for us to see how many good friends Ian had, and we can at least know he was with such good friends for much of his time.

21st January 2009 - Goodbye to a Friend

Yesterday saw the funeral of our friend and club member Ian Armstrong.
It was testament to Ian that the Church and the Crematorium was filled to bursting point with Family, friends, club members, work colleagues and former work colleagues. This shows the high regard in which he was held by everyone.
There is a black hole left in our lives, we know Ian would want us all to rally round and support each other, because that is what he has done and would do for us all.
As Roly said in church yesterday Ian will be by some celestial pool somewhere having called at a celestial cafe for a bacon butty doing what he does best, catch fish that nobody else can catch.

On behalf of Ian's family, we would like to thank every single person who came along yesterday in celebration of Ian's life. We all have great memories, nobody can take those away, cherish them.

Wherever you are Ian, God Bless and save us a peg!

9th January 2008 - Whitegate Pool

It was brought to our attention earlier this week that there have been a number of dead fish found on our Whitegate pool.
We would like to advise everyone that this matter has been investigated by the Environment Agency and the fish deaths were found to be natural causes.
Due to the recent cold spell and the length of time that the pool was iced over.
Oxygen was unable to transfer from the air to the water because of the ice.
This depleted the dissolved oxygen content in the water which unfortunately has lead to the unfortunate deaths of approximately ten Carp. As Carp are the bigger fish they naturally have a higher requirement for Oxygen and are more susceptible to this change.
The pool is now thawing and holes are appearing in the ice allowing Oxygen transfer to resume.
The 'EA' advised us that there is no problems elsewhere either with the remaining fish or the water. It is an unfortunate event which could not be forseen.
We would like to advise everyone that POHAS take the care and protection of the pools and the fish very seriously and we have close relationships with the Environment Agency who are experts in such matters.
It has been an unfortunate incident and we are discussing with the 'EA' what if anything can be done to prevent such incidents occuring in the future.

8th January 2008 - Ian Armstrong

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our friend and fellow member Ian Armstrong passed away on Tuesday 6th January 2009.
Ian had been a club member for many years and was a good angler well known amongst the fishing fraternity in NW England.
He raised the profile of our club by his successes in local and national competitions.
Even though Ian's fishing skills exceeded many of those around him, he never dwelt on it, he was happy to pass on his knowledge and had time for everyone.

We wish to pass our deepest sympathy and condolences on to his family and friends.

We hope to publish funeral arrangements when they are available.

Ian
