16th December 2011 - Whitegate Pool

Bailiff Ian Maddock spent a couple of hours fishing yesterday at Whitegate Pool and caught approximately thirty Roach in that time on single white maggot with size 22 hook.
Seems that the restock we did a few weeks ago has livened the pool up. Although we restocked with Bream and Carp, the newbies seems to have improved the fishing.
If you are fishing our pools, please let us know how the fishing is going, what you caught, bait, hook size etc. We can then let everyone know. Send us a picture of your catch, we may be able to feature it on our website.

9th December 2011 - Morrison's Bag Pack

Junior and Senior members gathered at our local Morrison's Store yesterday evening to conduct what has become our annual bag pack. All the money raised from this event goes towards our Junior Development Fund which is used solely for our Junior members and helps us to continue providing free matches to encourage more Junior members of society to take up fishing and also goes towards funding free tackle and equipment we give out to our Junior members at our annual prize night which takes place every October.
As usual we bag packed from 5pm until 8pm last night and raised a total of £310.00 which is excellent in such a short space of time.
We would like to thank Morrison's for allowing us to do the bag pack in particular Store Manager Mark Roberts all the checkout staff, Morrison's customers who gave so generously and of course our members who gave up their evening on what was a diabolical night weather wise with Rain, Hail and strong winds. Our members in no particular order were Frank Davies, James and John Bryan, Joe Maddock, Matt Sutch, Kieran and Leon Charnock, Steven Clark, Tom Dulson and Alex Donaldson.
Thank you all very much on behalf of all of our Junior members.

NOVEMBER 2011

27th November 2011 - Fish Restocking

Finally the day arrived yesterday and our delivery of Bream and Carp (Both Mirror & Common) arrived for the restocking of our Whitegate and Brownlee's Pools.
This restock came about as most members know due to the heavy losses we suffered at the hand of the 2010/11 Winter spell, when both pools were frozen over for an extraordinary length of time and fish deaths were unavoidable, the Carp suffering worst of all. Our new Carp are all 6-8 inches in length and look really well as do the Bream.
So no excuse anglers, the fish are back and ready to be caught.
Many thanks to Will Fair our supplier who delivered to us yesterday.

19th November 2011 - Brownlee's Pool Workparty

For a second week our workparty trio of John, Frank and James spent two and a half hours today giving our Brownlee's Pool a Winter clean up. The work today included pruning of overhanging bushes, footpaths cleared of leaves, water channel beneath footbridge cleared, obstructing weeds around pegs removed plus much more besides. If you are going to Brownlee's to fish you will see a difference, and have less snags to hit whilst you are fishing. Thanks again to our workers for giving their time up and putting plenty of hard work into tidying up our pool. Much appreciated by everyone at POHAS. Digger John, Digger Frank & Digger James

Digging More Digging And, More Digging!

13th November 2011 - Whitegate Pool Workparty

Members donned chest waders to undertake a clean up at our Whitegate Pool today. John and James Bryan and Chairman Frank Davies laboured for two hours on site at Whitegate. Amongst the jobs was to remove litter from the pool which included logs, concrete blocks, fence posts, a traffic cone, metal fencing, old rods, reels and even a rod bag amongst other items! Also on the list of work was to remove water lilies which through the course of the Summer had gone wild. We also removed some of the reeds which were starting to overgrow the pegs, cleaned out the water inlet and also skimmed the surface to remove blanket weed. All in all a good days work and our thanks have to go to James, John and Frank who laboured intensely for two hours. Great work boys! Oh yes, and we did a litter clean up around the pool as well, well done chaps!

Cans n Clothes

Further to last nights meeting, club member Mike Lewis came up with a suggestion to collect old clothes and aluminium drinks cans in exchange for cash to be donated to club funds and help toward costs of future club developments. Members agreed that this was a good idea and something which Mike agreed to organise on behalf of the club.

So, if you have any old clothes and/or drinks cans, we would be happy to here from you. As long as the items are bagged up ready we would arrange collection at a time to suit you. Please get in touch you can e-mail us or contact us by phone, all details are shown on our 'contact us' page.

There is likely to be a pools fund which is to be agreed by all members on the day and would pay out top three places (subject to agreement). Peg Fee's are only £5 and we have fifteen pegs available on each match. Pegs are on the church side of Lymm Dam, which is on your left as you look at the water from the bridge (see photo). A good news day today! Our Junior member team entered for the above, which took place at Border Fishery, Crewe, yesterday fought off six other clubs from around the county to win the Cheshire Junior team match 2011. Our team consisted of Ethan Neary (Captain), Joe Maddock, Tom Dulson, Matt Sutch, Liam Gaskell* and Callum Brown*. The match as mentioned was at Border Fishery, Crewe and took place on Meridian Canal and Three Islands Pool. Fishing for five hours under amended Angling Trust match rules our team pulled off a massive win against tough opposition. We would like to thank everyone involved, organisers, hosts, clubs, competitors, officials and parents for a great day. There was also an intermediate match, but we did not have a team to enter, but hey! Well done POHAS Juniors.
Below are the final club positions, to view the full details including those who fished and weights etc, click here.
Finally we would like to thank Warrington Anglers* for loaning us two of their Junior members at short notice to complete our team. Holiday commitments put paid to some of our Juniors who would have fished, had they been available.

11th August 2011 - Normal Service Resumed

Members and readers will know that this time last week we were reporting the bad news that vandals had seriously damaged one of our fishing platforms at our Whitegate Pool.
You will see from the photographs below that the deck in question has now been returned to it's former glory.
We mentioned in an earlier report that Councillor Kevin Reynolds had been in touch expressing his concerns over the mindless vandalism and he would see what he could do to help us.
Well true to his word Warrington Borough Council, in particular the Parks and Woodland Services team have been along and repaired the damage.
On behalf of everyone at POHAS we would like to express our thanks to everyone concerned in turning the problem around, they include Councillors Reynolds, Gleave and Wheeler and all those in Parks & Woodlands. Apologies if we have missed anyone out.
In the meantime, if anyone has any knowledge on who may have carried out the senseless attack, please let either us or Cheshire Police know.

7th August 2011 - Out of Bad comes Good

Thanks to our great local on-line newspaper Warrington Worldwide we have had offers of support from Great Sankey Parish Council. In a phone call from Councillor Kevin Reynolds this evening he has expressed his concerns over the Arson attack at our Whitegate Pool earlier this week and has offered to speak with colleagues and local authorities on our behalf to see what further assistance can be given.
We would like to thank Warrington Worldwide for publishing the article which brought it to the attention of the local authority, and of course to Councillor Reynolds for his prompt response and kind offer.

3rd August 2011 - Whitegate Pool - Arson Attack

Once again our pool at Whitegate has been a target for vandals.
It was reported to us today by a club member that one of the fishing platforms has been deliberately set on fire which has resulted in a large amount of damage to the platform.
It appears on inspection that the fire was started in a wheelie bin and left on the platform. The remains of the wheels can be seen on the destroyed platform. As yet we do not know who caused the damage or exactly when the incident happened. Suffice to say the deck is unusable and not only is it an inconvenience to members who will indirectly have to foot the bill for it's repair. But those who know the area will realise that the pool is located amongst a housing estate, and if the incident had gone out of control the matter could have been a whole lot worse.
It goes without saying that if anyone has any further information which would help us and Cheshire Police bring the person(s) to justice, please get in contact with us or directly to Cheshire Police on 01925 652222.

14th June 2011 - Cormorant Watch

The Angling Trust has launched a new web site for you and your fishing friends to record sightings of cormorants, goosanders and mergansers throughout the UK: www.cormorantwatch.org

The new site is easy to use - it takes less than a minute to record your sighting.

The Angling Trust succeeded in persuading the Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon to carry out a review of the cormorant licensing procedure and he has stated that he is prepared to take "bold decisions". As part of this review, the Trust needs data on the abundance of cormorants to convince the government to take decisive action. So now it's your turn - go to www.cormorantwatch.org and make a difference.

1st June 2011 - Winter League, Match Update

For those members likely to be fishing our Winter League (I know, we haven't had Summer yet), we have had to change a match date.
Originally we were set to have a match at Partridge Lakes on Pine Pool on Saturday 8th October. This has now been changed to Saturday 22nd October. Other details are unaffected and it's only a date change, venue and pool remain unaffected.
Apologies to all for any inconvenience. Please amend your records accordingly.

For those members who are going to fish Makins on 18th June as part of our Summer League. We would like to advise members that we have received a new set of rules which is now available either via our publications page along with many other documents or by clicking here. Remember it is the responsibility of the angler to be aware of the rules, not the club. You have been warned and that goes for any club matches.

9th May 2011 - National Fishing Month 2011

Due to circumstances beyond our control and discussions at our last Club Meeting we have withdrawn the club from the above event.
It goes without saying we regret having to make this decision and it wasn't one taken lightly. But due to issues external to our club we now announce this unfortunate situation.

We are in the early stages of considering a coaching event later in the year which would be run along similar lines but purely at a local level and on a smaller scale.
We know too well the importance of encouraging people into fishing, particularly young people. So if and when we can sort an event out and fit it into our already hectic calendar, we will announce it to members and of course here on our club website.

6th May 2011 - Talking Rubbish

During last month you will have read on our news page about the unfortunate death of a Moorhen at our Brownlee's Pool. Brought about by anglers who have left discarded fishing line.
At our latest club meeting we have been advised of members who have left discarded tins and also unused bait around the pool area.
We would like to remind members that it clearly states in our rules both on this website and in club licences all litter is to be disposed of either in bins provided or taken home by the angler.
Failure to adhere to club rules are not only an hazard to others, but could see any offending member asked to leave the venue, and/or have licence withdrawn with no refunds and/or reported to relevant authorities.
Worst case scenario, the club could have it's lease withdrawn by the land owner. Fishing would then cease.
I'm sure 99.99% of members abide by the rules and would not wish this to happen. If you do see it happening either tell the perpetrator directly or refer to a club official who will inform club committee.
Thank you for helping us.

6th May 2011 - POHAS Fish Stocks

During our last club meeting it was brought to the attention of committee and members present that concerns had been raised over fish stocks in our two club pools. Understandable concerns based on the significant amount of Carp that were lost over the Winter of 2010 following the 'Big Freeze'.
The intention is that we will review this matter following this Summer once we have a better picture of what's been caught during the season. If it is agreed that stocks need looking at, we will discuss with our colleagues at the Environment Agency. If stocks are added and at this moment it is an 'if'. Restocking cannot assume to include large Carp, for several reasons. Primarily that any icing on pools firstly affects Carp, as can be seen from last Winter, and also the prohibitive cost.
Members will know we keep licence prices as low as we can so the sport is affordable to more people. If we were to keep adding Carp and losing them, it would not be best use of club funds which is members money and licence prices would have to escalate to cover any such costs.
To finish, we will look carefully after this season, rest assured the club is run by anglers for anglers, and we will do what's best for all concerned.

Members can help us with this decision making. If you have been fishing on our pools, we would love to hear from you, when you fished, what bait, techniques and what you caught. We will keep a record and use any information we gain to help us with future club developments. Better still, you send us a picture and we may include it on our news page or in our photo gallery. Just e-mail us by using the 'contact us' button at the left of this and most other web pages on this site.

Thank you for expressing concerns and rest assured we will do our best to continue to provide good fishing at an affordable price.

4th May 2011 - Sat Nav Information

With the rise in popularity of SatNavs we have uploaded two files suitable for use with the majority of SatNavs, eg, TomTom and Garmin.
The files in OV2 (TomTom) and CSV (Garmin and others) format contain destination information for many of the fisheries we have been to over recent years. So you can throw your A to Z's in the recycling and listen to that lovely woman on your satnav telling you where to go!!
To download, please visit our publications page.

PS: Should you require an alternative format, let us know and we will do our best to oblige.

PPS: We cannot be held responsible for any download/installation issues brought about. Whilst we have done our best to ensure the files are suitable and error free, downloading and installing files is entirely outside of our responsibility.

22nd April 2011 - Brownlee's Work Party

Further to the note in yesterday's news, we have today carried out the necessary maintenance. Members who have visited the pool lately will have seen that one of the deck structures had started to sag due to a support beam which had rotted and lost it's rigidity.
In the heat of the day today the offending section was lifted and a new support beam installed. Whilst we were there members also did some de-silting work in the channel which connects both pools and other odd jobs in the three hours we were on site.
Thanks to the members who endured today's unseasonal blazing sun. They were James, John, Roly, Frank, Ken and Paul. Also thanks to Steph who saved the day by getting some cool drinks for the workers

20th April 2011 - Litter

It has been brought to our attention that a Moorhen has been found dead on our Brownlee's Pool due to entanglement in discarded fishing line.
We would like to remind anglers/members that any litter, bait, equipment and any other unused items should either be disposed of in the litter bins provided or taken home for disposal. This is made clear in the licence and anyone found leaving litter or contravening any other rules will be dealt with accordingly.
There is NO EXCUSE to leave litter, bin or bins are located within metres of the pool. Please ensure you act in accordance with club rules at all times. Whilst the pool by agreement with the landowner (Woodland Trust) allows us to fish the waters, the area is also a public space. Please treat the area with respect and be respectful to the habitat and the animals that live in it.

26th March 2011 - Old Friends

A quick note to let club members know, we bumped into an old friend on Thursday night in the shape of Joe Worsley our former Club Secretary and now 'ex-pat'.
Joe would like us to pass on his and Marie's best wishes to all who remember him. He may have been away a few years but he is still supporting Warrington Wolves and Liverpool FC.
Members may recall Joe and Marie moving to France a few years ago to start a new life there. Joe tells us all is well with both himself and Marie working, Joe only part time, he hopes to spend more time fishing soon.
He did say if one of his next flying visits coincides with a club match he may try to attend to catch up with old friends...We look forward to it Joe, best wishes to you both.

6th March 2011 - Supercup, Round 1 v Warrington Anglers (updated)

Today saw our squad take on Warrington Anglers in the first round of the 2011 Supercup. The venue, Meadow View Fishery, Lymm and we were on Linnet Pool.
Warrington Anglers fished well under the conditions which were tough. A water temperature of 4 degree's, an air temperature of about 7 degree's and a slight cold North Easterly breeze made for a difficult day. Unfortunately POHAS had more of a struggle today, and after five hours we lost quite convincingly with Warrington winning six sections and us two.
Well done to Warrington Anglers who fished a great match and were good sports. We must mention a notable big fish caught by Arthur Plumb of Warrington, out of his total catch of 27lb 12oz which netted him second place in the match, one of his fish was a gorgeous Carp weighing in at 19lb 2oz. Well done also to Rick Taylor of Warrington who was the overall winner with a weight of 29lb 8oz, and our own John Bryan who got third place with 16lb 2oz.
Thanks to our team captain James Bryan and vice captain Alan Lamb, and to the chosen few for today's match who were Kev Smith, John Bryan, Frank Davies, Jim Bates, Colin Wibberley and Tom Prescott.
Thanks also to Mrs Prescott (Tina) for chauffeuring Tom whilst he is car less (and that's another story!).
Thanks to all for the great sportsmanship, we wish Warrington well in the next round.

3rd February 2011 - ClubMark

After a lot of work by several members of the club and assistance from the Angling Development Board, POHAS has spent the last eighteen months working towards achieving ClubMark status. We are pleased to announce that as from 1st February 2011 we are now recognized as a sports club achieving ClubMark status. At the time of writing we are one of only five fishing clubs in North West England achieving this standard.
This will now help us in our goal to be able to offer coaching opportunities to young people within the schools in our area and give them a local venue where they can practice and enjoy their skills.

Minutes for last night's meeting will follow shortly.

4th January 2011 - POHAS Pools - Update

We would just like to advise everyone that the current state of both of our pools following the recent Arctic weather conditions is continually being monitored by the Club committee and bailiffs, We are also in close communication with our local Environment Agency colleagues.
Anyone visiting the pools will see that there are several fish that are currently frozen either below or within the ice.
POHAS Pools

This unfortunately brought about by the severe weather conditions. When temperatures plummet as they have to minus 10 degree's Celsius, not a lot can be done to prevent expanses of freshwater freezing over.
Most of the fish visible are Common Carp and are susceptible due to the fact they are not a native species of this country, or even this latitude in the Northern Hemisphere (they are originally natives of Asia). They are also prone to getting a chill in their swim bladders in such extreme low temperature conditions, which makes them float towards the surface which is of course is then beyond their control and leaves them open to the course of nature, which in this case is the ice.
We understand that seeing fish like this can be upsetting, we too feel the same. However we can't fight nature.
We will however be removing any dead fish from the pool as soon as access can be made.
Even though we have had a few days of temperatures being above Zero, they have not been sufficiently high enough for long enough to create a substantial thaw.
Our pools are being monitored regularly and as soon as it is possible to get any work done, we will be doing so.

2nd January 2011 - Angling Times Supercup 2011

We can now advise that we have the home draw this year and we are against Warrington Anglers - Blue. Not sure who the team consists of as they have entered two teams. Will advise as and when details become available and also of course at our meeting on Wednesday 5th January.

First round matches have to be fished on or before Sunday 6th March 2011.

2nd January 2011 - January Club Meeting

Look forward to seeing you all there. Supercup 2011 info will also be discussed at this meeting. Along with agreeing Winter matches for 2011.

2nd January 2011 - Happy New Year!
