19th December 2010 - Christmas Raffle

Last night saw the draw for our 2010 Christmas Raffle. Committee and members braved the Arctic weather to go to the Maltings pub, where we sold our remaining tickets and carried out the draw.
Thanks to everyone who purchased and those that sold tickets on our behalf. This year we raised £271 which goes towards funding future Junior activities.
We would also like to thank Chris, Brenda and Rod our hosts at the Maltings for all of their help and support.
Finally congratulations to the lucky winners of this years raffle.

NOVEMBER 2010

19th November 2010 - Morrison's 'Bag Pack'

Last night Junior and Senior club members descended on our Morrisons store in Warrington to 'carry out' our annual bag pack.
All monies raised goes towards our Junior development fund and supports all the work we do in arranging matches, purchasing of equipment, coaching courses etc, etc.
We did a three hour session from 5pm until 8pm and last night's efforts raised £277.90.

We would like to say thank you to Mark Roberts, Manager of the store and all his staff for making our stay welcome and supporting our club.
We must also thank everyone from the club who took part and packed 100's of bags for customers, they are (in no particular order), Matthew, Thomas, Kieran, Leon, Ethan, Jordan, James, John, Frank, Ken, Tina & Paul.
On behalf of all our Junior members who will benefit from this wonderful cash injection, thank you all very much.

29th October 2010 - Alf Smith

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of Alf Smith one of our club's founder members.
Back home after a health scare Alf recently caught a virus from which he appeared to be recovering. Sadly at the end of last week he was taken into hospital and passed away in his sleep on Tuesday 26th October.
The committee and members of Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society would like to pass on their deepest sympathy to Alf's family and friends at this difficult time.
As a mark of respect members fishing tomorrow's match at Blundell's Farm will hold a one minute silence in memory of club founder member and friend Alf.
Anyone that new Alf would know that even in later life he was always involved with the club and until a couple of months ago was still actively bailiffing our Whitegate Pool. He was also at the recent Presentation Evening held on 1st October handing out trophies to the winners.

Back in 2008 we did an interview with Alf to mark the 25th Anniversary of the club he helped found, along with Jack Crompton, Jim Galley, Ken Stilgoe and Rick Spencer. You can read the interview by clicking here.

We will of course post any information regarding funeral arrangements as we receive them.

A note to our Senior members, all matches are now booked on the basis of 20 pegs per match. It is in your interests to confirm prior to each match of your intention to fish. ie, don't assume you can just turn up and there will be a spare peg, we don't want to see anyone disappointed.

AUGUST 2010

25th August 2010 - Jolly Boys Outing 2010

After a one year absence our 'Jolly Boys Outing' resumed. Previous years have been in Stourport and Thirsk, with a gap year in 2009, this time it was off to Bewdley.
Bewdley was selected for two main reasons, excellent fisheries within a radius of 10 miles, and more pubs than you could shake a stick at.
Ten club members enrolled on this madcap five days in Bewdley, they were Frank,
Neil D, Jim, Kev, James, John, Adam, Alan, Paul aka Roly now aka Google and myself Paul aka Papperazzi.
By clicking on either of the photo's to the right you can view the photo gallery.
Just to warn you that unlike our usual galleries which have people fishing and on the odd occasion catching fish.....This gallery has very few fish and lot's of the insides of various pubs (dunno why).

A few thank you's must be mentioned.
To everyone on the outing and named above, thanks for a great week, I think it is fair to say everyone enjoyed it. Special thanks to Cheryl and Co in the Horn & Trumpet, Bewdley, our place of rest for the week, thanks for putting up with us, and this pub is highly recommended if you are looking for somewhere to stay in that area. Good accomodation, good food and the beer runs like a River!
Thanks to all the wives and Girlfriends back home for allowing us out.....Same time next year?

23rd August 2010 - Summer League, Larford Lakes

On Saturday 21st August we had our latest Summer League match at Larford Lakes, Worcestershire on 'Arena Pool'.
Whilst the match was nothing to write home about for most members. One member in particular, John Mysiak found himself to have drawn Golden Peg, which normally is a curse, but today John won the match with a weight of 14lb 13oz. As a result he went home with £200 in his pocket....Nice one John! Not a bad day out for you.
The links below will take you to the various reports and leagues which are of course now updated with the latest results.
The next match on the 4th September is our third and final coach trip for this year and we are off to Hallcroft Fishery on Bridge Pool.
Hope to see you there...

22nd July 2010 - Juniors cross the Border

Yesterday seven of our Junior members made the trip to Border Fishery in Crewe to fish in the Cheshire Junior Open 2010. In total there were thirty eight Juniors fishing from angling clubs across Cheshire. Fortunately the sun gods were shining on us all day apart from a few sprinkles of rain towards the end of the day. The draw took place at 10.00am and the match fished from 11.00am to 3.00pm. All the Juniors enjoyed the competition which was fished in a very sporting manner. At the end of the match following the weigh-in we had the presentation with Ethan from Penketh & Old Hall winning the match. Well done to Ethan and to all the Juniors who fished.
We have a few thank you's to do, firstly to Martin James of the Environment Agency for organising the event, to Stuart Godber and Bay Malton Angling Club for hosting the event, to Dave Smith for cooking the food. From POHAS we must also thank John Bryan our coach, Ken Whibley, Mike Lewis and Roy Sutton for coaching and transport, couldn't have done it without you. Finally to all the clubs, parents and anglers who took part, hope to see you again in two weeks when we have the CADG Junior Team Championship 2010 also at Border Fishery....

Yes, we know that it's still Summer (just), but thinking ahead is part of the committee's job for you match anglers.
With that in mind, we have now listed provisional match dates so as you can start filling your diary for valuable 'fishing time'. As you will see, not all dates are yet complete with venues, it is a work in progress. However, we have listened to everyone's comments and done the bookings to suit, we hope you agree.
Please note we have not yet looked into Junior matches for 2011, as soon as we have any details, you will see it here. To see the provisional list click here or navigate via the buttons to the left (matches, then click on 2011 matches).

18th July 2010 - National Fishing Month - Coaching Session No1

We had our first ever coaching session today at Meadow View Fishery, Lymm. Under the guidance of our Level 2 Coach John Bryan and other senior member assistants, six young people enjoyed three hours of instruction and an opportunity to fish at a commercial fishery. Fortunately the heavy rain held off, with only the odd brief shower which didn't cause any interruption to the coaching or the fishing. Juniors were taught how to plumb up, set the rigs, bait up, feed their swim and more besides depending on the fishing experience each young person had. Things must have gone right as all those attending caught fish, one young man even had a Common Carp in excess of 15lb which would have been welcome by any fisherman! See the photo gallery of today's event.
Everyone enjoyed the session so much we over ran by half an hour, all those fishing received a certificate and a useful reference booklet on angling. Goody bags had not arrived in time for this session, but when we get them they will be distributed to those who attended today's session and the remaining sessions.
We have three more sessions left on 1st, 8th & 15th August. Any young person interested in learning fishing skills should get in touch with us, either by phone or e-mail.
Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society would like to express their thanks to the following:

Margaret & Dave Berry of Meadow View Fisheries,
Andy Eaves & colleagues at Environment Agency NW
Darren Birch & colleagues at Angling Development Board
Helen Dagnall & co at Cheshire Angling, Warrington

Club Members: John Bryan (coach), James Bryan, Alan Lamb, Roy Sutton, Ken Whibley and all the adults that assisted at today's event, thank you all.

19th June 2010 -National Fishing Month 2010 (updated 13/7/10)

Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society are really pleased to be able to announce that this year we are going to be involved with National Fishing Month 2010.
Past events have been for a week, this year it is now a month long.
The aim of NFM is to encourage every family member to have a go at fishing, and NFM runs from 17th July to August 15th there will be activities locally as ours will be and also national events, see NFM website for full details.
To coincide with this month full of events, we have arranged four, three hour coaching sessions where under guidance from a Level 2 Qualified Coach and other assistants, up to ten people per session can learn the basics of coarse fishing. We will be holding all four sessions at Meadow View Fishery, Lymm. This fishery has excellent facilities with a shop, toilets, parking and access for disabled. For map to Meadow View click here.
If you are interested or know people that may be interested get in touch with us, all necessary contact details can be found via the 'contact us' button to the left of the page. Remember there are only ten spaces per session, so they are likely to go quite quickly. Please don't just turn up on the day without first booking with us, we don't want to disappoint, give us a call to discuss availability.
Don't worry, you won't need to bring any tackle or bait, that will be supplied for you, the coaching will be supplied, and the sessions are free to enter but subject to availability so you may want to pick up the phone quick. The only thing to bring is yourself and maybe any refreshments you may need during your stay, although there is a small shop on site catering for snacks, ie, pop, tea and coffee. We can also advise that with permission from the Environment Agency those fishing during the coaching sessions will not be required to purchase a rod licence specifically for the sessions as you will be covered under a group policy......However, we must point out that outside of the coaching sessions, if you are fishing in the UK you must have an Environment Agency rod licence if you are aged twelve or older. Failure to comply could result in a fine up to £2,500, ignorance is no defence and the EA have zero tolerance on licence evasion, you have been warned. Rod licences are available on-line from the Environment Agency or from your local Post Office.
We would not be able to run these sessions without the support both technical and financial from the following organisations, the Angling Development Board, Angling Trust, Environment Agency, Meadow View, Cheshire Angling Development Group, committee and Members of our club.
This information will shortly be published on the National Fishing Month 2010 website for even more publicity.
All four coaching sessions are being run on a Sunday from 4pm until 7pm, on the following dates:-

18th July, 1st August, 8th August and 15th August

So if you fancied fishing, now is the best opportunity to learn totally free of charge with the correct equipment on a safe venue with experienced coaches on hand....What are you waiting for?

14th June 2010 - Level 2 Coach

Congratulations to club member and bailiff John Bryan.
After an intensive six days over four weekends, John has successfully passed his 1st4sport Level 2 Coaching course. This is a nationally recognised standard and a requirement if you are to teach in sport.
As you would expect this course covers everything from presentation skills, child protection, first aid and much more.
John is now head coach at POHAS and will lead any coaching and Junior matches the club is involved in.
A few thank you's are in order, firstly to John for dedication his time not only to the course but to the club. To Darren Birch of the ADB (Angling Development Board) for supporting our clubs efforts to reach Clubmark Standard (which having a L2 coach does), to 'Get Qualified NW', run by the University of Cumbria,
to Tom Haworth and the ASET (Arts and Sports Engagement Team) Team at Warrington Borough Council for their funding towards the cost of this course and supporting our club.
Thanks to everyone involved,
John

14th June 2010 - Sunday Evening League - Meadow View Fishery

Yesterday saw the second of our series of three Sunday evening matches, and again some good weights were being pulled, some kicking and screaming from Lark Pool.
Without any bias we must say the last two weekends have been absolutely brilliant for fishing at Meadow View. Only eleven members fished this week mainly due to work commitments. I'm sure when they read this and the match report they will be even more gutted.
Several individuals had some clonckers out, but this evening James Bryan had a 15lb 4oz beast which took twenty minutes to land. By James' own admission he was knackered when he finally got it into the net.
Below you can see the quick links to the full match report and Sunday League. No photo's today as the papperazzi was keeping his new camera dry! (Don't worry, that novelty will soon wear off).

Birchwood Lions
Birchwood Lions Meeting

Whilst on the topic of future events, members of the POHAS committee, Frank Davies (Chairman), Paul Bryan (Club Secretary) along with John Bryan (Club Coach) attended a meeting of the Birchwood Lions to discuss an opportunity which will be beneficial to our club in our endeavours to achieve Clubmark status. Details are yet to be finalised, as soon as they are, we will publish them here.
We would like to thank Barry Collins, President of Birchwood Lions and all the committee and members for inviting us along to attend their meeting and for the warm welcome they extended to us. We hope you enjoyed our impromptu presentation, and we look forward to meeting up with you again soon.

25th May 2010 - Future Events

We have updated our events page with details on a 'bag pack' we are to hold at Morrisons Store, Warrington on Thursday 18th November 2010. Yes we know it is a while off yet, but pencil it in your diaries, as we will be looking for members (Adult and Junior) to help out on the evening. It will all start at 5pm with arrival at 4.30pm to sign in and get set up.
All proceeds will help the club fund various courses that need to be undertaken for us to achieve our Clubmark status (eg, First Aid, Child Protection, Coaching Courses etc). This is a nationally recognised standard for sports clubs, and achieving Clubmark status will help us to become better involved with local authorities and local schools to encourage younger members of our community to get engaged with sport, in our case, fishing. If you want to know more details about Clubmark click here.
If you want us to contact you nearer the time for a reminder, send us an e-mail by using the contact us button shown to the left of each page.

APRIL 2010

30th April 2010 - Sunday Summer Sizzlers

We are pleased to announce that a series of three Sunday Summer Evening matches have been organised. All matches take place at Meadow View, Lymm on Lark Pool which is the main match pool. All matches will fish from 5pm until 9pm. The match is open to all members and all age groups. Each member fishing can, on request, bring a friend to fish the match.
Peg Fee's are £5 per member or £10 per guest.
It goes without saying that a guest can become a club member by paying the respective fee (£15 Adult, £10 OAP, £5 Junior - 2010/11 Club Licence)), in which case their peg fee would then be at the Member rate of £5. They would also be entitled to book on our usual club matches (subject to availability) and fish our pools at Brownlee's and Whitegate.
Golden Peg will not be eligible for this series of matches, nor will any points awarded be eligible for our Matchman League. This is a stand alone set of three matches. Pools money will be agreed at the match, typically £2 per person with payout for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Entering into the pools money is not compulsory.
This is a trial run, and if successful and subject to availability this format can be developed in the future.

25th April 2010 - Still More Whitegate Vandalism

Yet again we have to report that more uneccessary vandalism was caused to our Whitegate Pool between Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd of April.
This is just one day after we removed a quantity of polystyrene insulation which had been thrown in and around the pool.
We have our suspicions of who the likely culprits are, and rest assured we will be keeping a close eye on the site, as will Cheshire Police and officials from Warrington Borough Council.
This anti social behaviour is totally unacceptable and spoils the area for the local community and those entitled to fish the pool.
We urge anyone who has information on such unacceptable behaviour contact us or Cheshire Police. All calls of course will be in the strictest confidence

21st April 2010 - More Whitegate Vandalism

Unfortunately we have to report another act of vandalism which took place today at Whitegate Pool. As readers may know, there is a building site adjacent to the pool and today someone decided to remove sheets of polystyrene insulation and tins of paint from the site and redistribute them,
The polystyrene sheets as you can see from the photo's below made it to the pool, and luckily the tins of paint stayed in close proximity to the building site. Had the paint got into the pool, then it may have been a different story.
It goes without saying that the incident has been reported. If anyone knows anything they can either contact an official at the club, or contact Cheshire Police.

20th April 2010 - Lamb to the slaughter!

Congratulations to the club madman Alan Lamb. On Sunday 18th April at the Red Lion Pub in Penketh, Alan and Emily completed a reverse bungee. Their 20 seconds of terror raised in excess of £180 for Christies Hospital so well done Al and Emily.
It was worth a fiver to see the looks on your faces as you left for your 145ft journey into space.
If you click on the photo you can see the video which is posted on YouTube,

As a community club we are pleased to be able to offer support and use of our facilities to this organisation who do excellent work in this area of healthcare.

8th March 2010 - Supercup 2010 - "They think it's all over"

The first round of the 2010 Supercup took place for us on Saturday at Meadow View. Richmonds had the home draw against ourselves and Partridge Lakes.
Typically our practice was great the week before, but the Round One match was a different story.
The weather was great, but fishing wasn't. After five painstaking hours, the weigh-in took place and the points decided. In first place and going through to Round Two was Partridge Lakes, they won every section except one.
Second was POHAS we had a section win and in fact a match win with 30+ lb caught, well done Tom Prescott you stopped 'em getting a clean sweep.
We also had a few second places in some sections, well done to George, James and Roy (sorry if I missed anyone out).
Finally third on the day was Richmonds.
Just a few thank you's (after all it was the Oscars today!). Thanks to Richmonds for organising the match, thanks to all anglers for their great sportsmanship. Thanks to Dave and Margaret at Meadow View for their hospitality, thanks to James and Alan for leading the Supercup again this year, thanks to all the squad members (you know who you are), and finally thanks to the eight who fished the match, see them below, they were (in no particular order):- James (Captain), Alan (Vice Captain), John, Tom, Colin, Kev, Roy and George.

5th March 2010 - Where's Wally?

You may recall we wished a certain Mr Lamb a happy 21st on Monday.
As you can see with the photo's here, it was a "Where's Wally" theme.
We were told that it was a great night.
Hope you have recovered in time for the Supercup on Saturday.

2nd March 2010 - Licences, Licences, Licences

We know we have mentioned our club licence which you can get through our shop.
We also need to mention that from 1st April, if you fish anywhere in the UK you need to purchase/renew your Environment Agency Rod Licence (if you are aged 12 or older).
You can be fined up to £2,500 if when asked you cannot provide evidence of a valid Rod Licence.
The licences can be obtained either from your local Post Office, or on-line from the Environment Agency. If you click on the EA Logo to the right a new window will open in your web browser and take you directly to the page you need.
Don't forget £2,500 buys an awful lot of fishing tackle.

2nd March 2010 - Vandalism at Whitegate Pt 2

Following inspection the deck structure mentioned in yesterday's news is deemed unsafe due to the fire damage it received with the assistance of some numb headed vandal(s).
The matter is now in the hands of Cheshire Police, and Warrington Borough Council are also aware of the situation. As requested yesterday, if anyone has any information which could be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact any of the authorities mentioned or a member of the club committee. You can also e-mail us by using the 'contact us' button to the left of this web page.
Signs have now been put in place (see photo) warning anyone not to stand on the unsafe structure.
Warning Signs

1st March 2010 - Vandalism at Whitegate

From good news below to some bad news.
As you will see from the photo's to the right, some arsonist has decided to take it upon themselves to set fire to one of our fishing decks.
The incident took place at our Whitegate Pool, and to the best of our knowledge took place on the evening of Saturday 27th February 2010.
The damage is substantial, in it's present state we advise that nobody attempts to go on the deck as the integrity of the deck structure has been seriously undermined by the fire damage.
It goes without saying that the incident has been reported to both Warrington Borough Council and also Cheshire Police.
If anyone has any knowledge on who may have carried out this needless vandalism, you can contact a member of the club committee, any information received will be in the strictest confidence. You can also of course contact Cheshire Police.
