Today was the second winter league match of 2017, held at Lingmere on the Match Lake. Last time we visited here, the fish had other things on their mind and were in full spawning mode, so we were all hoping for a better days fishing on this occasion.
Upon arrival, the usual suspects were ready and waiting in the café at 8am raring to go, and were midway through the customary full English breakfast. With only fifteen members fishing today, everyone was afforded a bit more room, so the hope was that we’d all benefit from the extra space (yes, just like we hoped it would at Lindholme recently).
Following the draw, everyone headed for their pegs and the ‘all in' was set at 10am, giving a decent amount of time to set up for all eventualities.
Looking around the lake during the early stages of the match, the pole (short and long) appeared to be the plan of attack for most, but as the match wore on, the wind strength increased dramatically, wreaking havoc when trying to present a rig and hold the pole still.
This wasn’t helped by a persistent undertow in the opposite direction. In the end, we had no choice but to fish close in and down the edge, and then, it was still a nightmare.
By all accounts, pellet and maggots were the favoured baits today and down the edge was productive for the majority – not surprising given the conditions.
Unfortunately, after all the excitement of our weigh-in at Lindholme two weeks ago, there were no “biggest fish” contenders today. Today’s 'un-lucky' recipient of the Golden Peg was Neil Davies and we sensed that this could finally be the day... These low turnouts are a great chance to take full advantage, however unfortunately for Neil the curse continued, but a very respectful third place – unlucky and well done Neil!
Congratulations to Peter Newton today on his match win with 42lb 14oz, James was second with 38lb 12oz and allegedly lost a “15lb beast” after the all out, Neil Davies took third place with 35lb 3oz.
Well done to everyone today who fished in challenging conditions. Plus point being it was mild at about 19 degree's and the sun was shining for the majority of the match.
Not long to wait until our next Winter league match, which takes place next Saturday 21st October at Fir Tree Fishery on 'Fir Water'
.
Hope to see you all there and let's hope it isn’t blowing a gale again! |
